The Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) Program, funded by the Government of Japan, is now accepting applications from government sector workers, who wish to obtain a Master’s degree, from Japanese Universities, starting from the academic year 2013. The courses will be taught in English and will take two years. The total number of participants from Ghana will be 5 per year.

The Japanese government is offering the JDS Scholarship Program to government officials in Ghana as a way of providing them with opportunities for academic research at Japanese graduate schools.   

The JDS Scholarship program targets, primarily, highly capable young government officers who are expected to engage in formulating and implementing social and economic development plans and to become leaders of Ghana in the 21st century.


Who is Eligible?

  • (a) Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of Ghana.
  • (b) Age: Between the ages of 22 and 39 (both inclusive) as of April 1st 2013.
  • (c) Academic background: University degree (Bachelor Holder)
  • (d) Working Experience: At least 3 years of work experience, as full-time staff, with the respective Target Organizations and in charge
  • of formulation, implementation, and monitoring of the policy.
  • (e) Exclusions: Applicants must not be serving in the military.
  • (f) Applicants must have a strong willingness to work for the development of Ghana on their return home.
  • (g) Persons who are; currently receiving, planning, or who have previously acquired, a master’s degree after studying abroad on a
  • scholarship awarded by other foreign assistances are ineligible.
  • (h) Participants must be in good health, both mentally and physically.
  • (i) Persons must have proficiency in English, sufficiently fluent for studying in Japan.



What Can I Study?

In accordance with the objectives of the JDS Scholarship Program, the fields of study are mainly limited to the "Social Sciences", such as, Law, Economics, and Public Policy. The Program contains "Sub-Programs" and "Components" which are equivalent to target areas and development issues, and these are related to the social and economic development policies of Ghana.

courier, to the JDS project office in Accra.

How to Prepare Your Research Plan

Before you begin writing your research plan, you are recommended to carefully review the 'Graduate School Information' section to make sure that the graduate school of your choice offers an appropriate curriculum and has faculty members relevant to your research plan. You can obtain more information by, visiting the websites of individual graduate schools, or by visiting the JDS Project Office.

NOTE: Your research plan should be consistent with; one of the aforementioned 'Component' (development issues), be an offered program by the graduate school of your application, and correspond to the overall objectives of the organization to which you belong.  For more information, please refer to the Application Guidelines.


How to Prepare for Maths Exam

The maths examination is of approximately 60 minutes duration and consists of: arithmetic operations, solving fractions, equations, inequalities, matrixes, basic quadratic functions, basic operations of exponential and logarithmic functions, basic integral and differentiation, etc.

Exam scores will be used for reference purposes during initial selection by the accepting universities. Please, prepare yourself for the exams!

  • Other permissible allowances (e.g. Books, Research Expense etc.)
(Your dependents may accompany you to Japan but their travel costs and expenses will NOT be coverd)
